Introducing: Chris Benoit

During the Raw season Premier, Paul Heyman claimed that Chris Benoit was only on loan to Smackdown and really belongs to ECW.

Chris Benoit is a graduate of the legendary Stu Hart’s dungeon and began his career in 1985 in Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling promotion.

After leaving Stampede Wrestling, Benoit wrestled in Japan (wearing a mask) under the name of The Pegasus Kid before loosing his mask and reinventing himself as Wild Pegasus.

Benoit eventually left Japan and compete in Mexico and Germany before having a short stint in WCW.  During his time in WCW, he captured the attention of Paul Heyman and signed to Extreme Championship Wrestling as The Canadian Crippler.

Chris Benoit became a favourite of the ECW crowd and with Dean Malenko he won the ECW World Tag Team Championship from Sabu and The Tazmaniac in February 1995. Chris Benoit left ECW due to visa problems which led him to return to Japan, before joining WCW in late 1995/early 1996.

Benoit began competing in WCW in the Cruiserweight division before feuding with Kevin Sullivan (resulting in Benoit having an affair with Kevin Sullivan’s wife Nancy). In 1998 Benoit competed against the likes of current Smackdown Superstars Booker T and Fit Finlay, before winning the WCW Tag team titles with Dean Malenko and later winning the WCW United States Championship.

Benoit became more and more unhappy with WCW management and despite winning the Heavyweight Championship in January 2000, Chris Benoit left the company the next day alongside his friends Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn, forfeiting his title in the process.

Chris Benoit entered the WWF with his friends from WCW as The Radicalz. Chris Benoit captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 2000. Chris Benoit then began a memorable feuds with Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho. At the King Of The Ring PPV, Benoit aggravated a neck injury while delivering a top-rope back suplex to Steve Austin.

Once Benoit had recovered from his injury, Chris Benoit was often confined to “mid card” status and tag team matches until he won the 2004 Royal Rumble and later the WWE Heavyweight Championship in a triple threat match with Shawn Michaels and then champion Triple H.

After loosing the title to Randy Orton, Chris Benoit again struggled to rise to the top of the WWE and often competed for the US Heavyweight Championship. On The October 13 edition of Smackdown! Chris Benoit defeated Mr. Kennedy to win his fifth United States Championship.

Many amongst the Internet Wrestling Community believe that Chris Benoit has the ability to become a wrestling great, but is yet to have much time at the top of a brand or company.  ECW would give Chris Benoit that opportunity and of course he would be an ideal replacement for the recently released Kurt Angle in terms of technical and submission ability.
