Thanks to http://www.wrestlemag.com for the following ECW report from London, England:

- The set is the usual UK deal with a phone box, London bus etc.

- The Hardy Boyz beat Chavo Guerrero & Gregory Helms in a pre-TV dark match.

- ECW got started with CM Punk backstage with the New Breed. Punk gave one of those phony heel apologies and said to put it behind them as they’ve got the 8-man elimination match coming up tonight.

- Bobby Lashley beat Umaga via DQ in their WrestleMania 23 rematch. After the match, Lashley beat down Armando and Vince.

- Elijah Burke cut a promo saying tonight was the biggest night of the New Breed’s life.

- A video for The Condemned aired.

- Snitsky beat Balls Mahoney in a short match.

- CM Punk returned for another New Breed match ahead of tonight’s ECW main event.

- A video aired to plug the Dusty Rhodes DVD, which has been out for a year or so.

- The ECW Originals (RVD, Sabu, Sandman, Dreamer) took on The New Breed. Punk was made by Burke to sit at ringside to keep it 4 on 4 as The New Breed team is Burke, Striker, Cor Von and Thorn. They eventually get down to Burke vs RVD. Punk laid out Burke with a kick, leading to Van Dam hitting him with the frogsplash and getting the win.

Post-match, Punk hit Burke with the Go To Sleep to end the ECW taping.

Report by Gerweck.net

- Opening video.

- Mr. McMahon opens the show by walking to the ring. He is still sporting the fedora, but you can tell his hair is growing back. Vince said Wrestlemania 23 was his biggest embarrassment, being shaved bald by Trump, Austin, and Bobby Lashley. He said Austin and Trump are out of the picture in terms of gaining revenge, which leaves the ECW champion. Vince said he barred Lashley from the building. Vince said Lashley is suffering from a severe concussion. They recapped the Shane/Lashley angle from Raw last night, and the announcement of the Lashley-Umaga-Shane-Vince match for Backlash. Vince said Lashley will loss the ECW title at Backlash. Vince predicted that he will win the ECW title at the PPV. Mr. McMahon has started to make Lashley’s life a living heel. Vince said he is going to make the fan’s lives a living heel as well.

- Backstage, RVD and CM Punk conversed. RVD said Punk fits in with the originals, but Elijah Burke interrupted. Burke said Punk will give his decision next week, but Punk said he’ll decide tonight.

- Commercial break.

(1) Tommy Dreamer vs. Kevin Thorn (with Ariel). Dreamer is wearing an “ECW Originals” t-shirt. Maybe the originals can make some money before they get kicked to the curb. Backstage, Punk watched the match on a monitor. Thorn wins a short TV match with the dark kiss in 3:15. Ariel now has a blonde streak in her hair.

- Backstage, Extreme Exposure was putting their make up on when Snitsky walked in behind them. He just starred at them, and they left one by one.

- Commerical break.

- Styles said they are sold out at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, and then introduces more “The Condemned” hype.

- Styles and Tazz recapped the Snitsky/Hardcore Holly injury angle. They said Holly’s injury required surgery.

(2) Stevie Richards vs. CM Punk. Before the bell rang, Matt Striker (all dressed up) came out to ringside, as did The Sandman to watch the match.

- Commercial break.

- After the break, the Richards-Punk match is joined in progress. Punk scored the pin fall victory, although Sandman almost cost him the match. Sandman tried to explain the situation to Punk after the match, as he tried to swing for Striker’s head, but accidently hit Punk.

- They plugged the Cor Von vs. RVD match.

- Extreme Expose. As they finished up, Snitsky came out and chased them out of the ring. Layla was trapped in a corner as Snitsky starred her down until Ball Mahoney made the save with a steel chair, but received a big boot for his efforts.

- They re-aired the Burke/RVD/Punk backstage conversation.
(3) Rob Van Dam (with Sabu) vs. “The Alpha Male” Marcus Cor Von. Sabu was sporting a neck brace to sell his injury from the extreme rules eight man match. Fans chanted “RVD, RVD.” Burke gives Sabu a DDT on the outside of the ring. Shoulder block, and a pin fall victory for Cor Von. Punk came out, took off his shirt, and stood in the ring with Burke and Cor Von. He shook hands with Burke, thus joining the New Breed. Striker and Thorn came out to celebrate. Cor Von and Thorn put him up on their shoulders.

ECW on Sci Fi: april 3rd

We start with Bobby Lashley coming out to the ring with the ECW Title belt around his waist. Joey Styles and Tazz hyped Lashley’s win over Umaga at Mania as Lashley posed for the crowd. Lashley took the mic and said Mania was the biggest moment of his life. He said everyone from ESPN to USA Today to the Colorado Springs Gazette was talking about Mania. Lashley showed us a clip of McMahon’s bald head, then we saw a video package on McMahon’s promo on Raw last night before Lashley interrupted and showed off McMahon’s baldness. Lashley then said he knows McMahon is going to try to make his life a living hell going forward, but he doesn’t care because nothing will stop him. One of Lashley’s better promos on a very short list. Good to have a responsive crowd, as well.

Styles discussed the ECW Originals’s win over the New Breed at Mania as a “career affirming victory,” then he plugged the re-match tonight.

[Commercial Break]

They showed a video package on the premiere of “The Condemned.”

[Q2]

1 — C.M. PUNK vs. STEVIE RICHARDS

Tazz talked about Punk being inches away from winning the Money in the Bank match at Mania. We saw Punk sporting taped ribs thanks to the bumps he took in the match. At least someone is selling injuries from Mania. Punk kicked Richards in the back of the leg early on, then caught him with a flying kick to the face for a one count. Richards then nailed Punk in the gut and went to work on the taped ribs. After a few chants for Punk, he came back with running knee strikes in the corner before catching Richards with a bulldog for a close nearfall. Punk then landed backhanded slaps to the face before lifting up Richards for the Go 2 Sleep, which Tazz actually called by name this week. He made the cover for the win.

WINNER: Punk in 5:00. Predictable, formula match. Richards could be a valuable heel on the brand if built up with any credibility. He’s a serviceable enhancement talent, but used sparingly as he’s being used right now, he doesn’t present much of an opposition to someone like Punk, who needs wins over credible opponemts. (*1/2)

Backstage, RVD and Timbaland exchanged pleasantries and RVD told him to find him if he needs anything. RVD walked away, then Extreme Expose walked up to him and said they’re huge fans. Leyla did the talking and told him to watch their dance tonight. Kelly Kelly and Brooke just stood there giggling the whole time. Timbaland pulled out his phone and started sending out some text messages about Expose.

[Commercial Break]

Punk was catching his breath backstage when Matt Striker and Marcus Cor Von walked up to him. Striker told Punk that they’re impressed by his work. Punk then told Striker that he already told Elijah Burke he’s fine on his own. Cor Von stepped up to Punk and made a veiled threat he’s either with the New Breed or against the New Breed. Striker intervened and told Punk to just watch their match against the Originals and consider the offer. Good definition of roles, with Striker being more of the reasonable conscious of the group.

Extreme Expose did their halftime show dance to a Timbaland track.

We saw the recap video of WrestleMania from 3 to 23. A lot of filler tonight. If you actually listen to the lyrics of the Mania theme song, which I’ve tuned out over the course of eight weeks, it’s a rather appropriate greeting for a carnival show.

[Q3]

They showed a graphic for Hardcore Holly vs. Snitsky up next. Possibly the worst graphic of a human being ever shown on TV.

2 — HARDCORE HOLLY vs. SNITSKY

Holly in the babyface role tonight. Snitsky came out with a combination of drool and sweat dripping down his mouth. He went for a big boot right away, but Holly ducked before accepting a hard clothesline. Tazz wanted to know if something happened in Snitsky’s childhood or in his past to make him this demented. TNA’s writing staff would have a field day with this storyline. Snitsky landed knock down blows, then screamed at Holly to get up. Holly teased an Alabama Slam, but Snitsky easily slipped out and hit a big boot for the win.

Afterward, Snitsky kicked Holly while he was down, then he threw him to the floor. He then grabbed a chair from ringside and stalked Holly before jabbing it into Holly’s gut repeatedly. He then placed Holly’s right arm in between the ring steps and smashed the ring steps with the chair. Holly finally freed himself and grabbed his arm in pain. Styles called for medical attention as Snitsky left ringside and Holly sold a broken arm.

WINNER: Snitsky in 3:00. We know where this is going. Snitsky vs. Lashley coming to a TV set near you in oh, about a few weeks. It looks like Holly will be taking some time off. (1/4*)

[Commercial Break]

They recapped the Hall of Fame ceremony from Saturday night.

The New Breed came out and Tazz did a nice job of getting the New Breed’s heat back after they lost to the Originals at Mania. The Originals came out, then they cut to a break.

[Commercial Break]

3 — ECW ORIGINALS (RVD & SABU & THE SANDMAN & TOMMY DREAMER) vs. NEW BREED (ELIJAH BURKE & MARCUS COR VON & MATT STRIKER & KEVIN THORN w/Ariel) — Extreme Rules match

Sabu and Striker were battling in the ring out of the break, with Sabu landing a springboard DDT right off the bat. The action quickly broke down, then RVD went under the ring and brought out the weaponry. Dreamer smashed men with a trashcan lid, then the New Breed retreated to the outside. The New Breed recovered in the ring and Dreamer took a drop toe hold into a chair from Cor Von. Striker and Burke then took turns bashing Dreamer with various weapons. The fans rallied with a “New Breed sucks” chant, then Burke covered Dreamer for a nearfall. Out of nowhere, Dreamer caught Burke and Thorn with a dual DDT. RVD and Sabu then double-teamed Cor Von before setting up an aerial combo on Striker for a nearfall. Sabu went for a springboard move on Sabu, but Cor Von caught him in mid-air with a powerbomb on a chair. Dreamer grabbed Burke and hung him upside in the corner, then hit a basement dropkick sending a chair into Burke’s face.

Dreamer fired up, but Cor Von caught him in the back with a chair, but Sandman cut him off with cane shots to the head. Cor Von quickly recovered and smashed Dreamer into a chair with a fallaway slam. Cor Von then gave Sandman the Pounce, sending him rolling to the outside. RVD and Sabu then followed with a chair shot before Thorn entered the scene and ran over both RVD and Sabu with knock-down clotheslines. Thorn and RVD battled and teased table spots, but Sabu ended the exchange with a chair shot blow to Thorn’s face. Sabu then placed Thorn on a table and went up top. Sabu and RVD then came off the top turnbuckle together with a dual leg drop on Thorn, sending him through the table. Sabu turned his back after dumping Striker over the top rope to the floor, then he gave Sabu a sick double knee smash to the back of Sabu’s head, sending Sabu crashing through a second table in the corner. Burke came up limping, then quickly covered Sabu for the win.

Afterward, everyone limped around while selling the effects of a stunt brawl. RVD, who had a cut on his left shoulder, checked on Sabu. The New Breed stood tall on the outside while Sabu seemed the freshest of the Originals despite taking the loss. Styles asked how the Originals would come back from this after losing at their own game. Intriguing.

WINNERS: New Breed in 9:00. This type of giant stunt brawl is like a soft, comfortable bed. Easy to get into, but hard to get out of. In other words, this isn’t the type of match WWE can depend on, despite it being an easy formula to get a rise out of the crowd, to maintain the longevity of this brand. Used sparingly and as a special attraction match, though, and it can help enhance a feud. In this case, they enhanced the feud by getting the heat back on The Originals to set up the rubber match down the road, whether on PPV or on a heavily-hyped edition of ECW. WWE still needs to build up the wrestling content on the show, otherwise fans will only get involved when they’re fed a chaotic dish of tables, chairs, and trashcans. ECW can’t maintain that with a roster full of aging wrestlers. In and of itself, an exciting main event to stir the pot in the Originals vs. New Breed feud.

Event: ECW On Sci-Fi
Location: Grand Rapids, MI

Opener:

- Show starts off with a photo of Mr. McMahon pinning Bobby Lashley from last night’s Raw.

(1) Rob Van Dam vs. Elijah Burke. Match started off this fans chanting “R-V-D.” RVD hits a spinning kick on Burke. He follows it by flipping over the top rope onto Burke, crashing them both onto the arena floor. [Commercial Break] Burke blocked a rolling thunder attempt by lifting up his knees. Burke mocked RVD by doing his pattened RVD thumbs gesture. Burke missed the Elijah experience, and followed it up by hitting the five star frog splash for the victory. Afterwards, the New Breed attacked RVD, which caused the ECW originals to come out to make the save.

- Extreme Expose with Kelly Kelly, Layla, and Brooke.

- Backstage, Edge talks to CM Punk and the Hardy Boyz. Edge said he knows they don’t want to team up with him, and he doesn’t want to team with them either; but if they can’t get along tonight, they can be successful.

(2) Snitsky vs. Balls Mahoney. Snitsky wins a squash with a big boot to the face.

- They recapped the McMahon-Lashley match from Raw.
- Up next, point and counter-point with Lashley & McMahon.

- Backstage, Finlay, Orton, Kennedy and Booker T (with Sharmell) speak. Finlay tries to cause problems telling Booker T that the others were talking about him. Booker T suggests a bond tonight, but Finlay tells Booker he can’t be trusted either.

- Vince McMahon is interviewed on a split screen, with Bobby Lashley backstage in Grand Rapids. McMahon is happy not to be in Grand Rapids, and is in Stamford, CT at WWE headquarters. McMahon tells Lashley that he is lucky that Mr. McMahon is not in the building tonight. Vince tells Lashley that his future is bleak after Wrestlemania. Lashley calls McMahon an old bastard, and tells Vince he is leaving Wrestlemania bald.

(3) Mr. Kennedy, Finlay, Booker T (with Sharmell) and Randy Orton vs. CM Punk, Edge, and the Hardy Boyz. There is a ladder set up next to the ring, with the brief case suspended from the ceiling. Punk tagged Edge, but he clearly didn’t want it. He came into the ring, went to a corner, then rushed over and tagged Punk back in. Edge decided to walk back up the entrance way. Bodies everywhere, as everyone brawls. Scissor kick by Booker on Punk, as the Booker, Finlay, Orton and Kennedy win this one. After the match, the winning team starts the brawl. The Hardys bring in the ladder, and go after the winning team. The Hardys ram Orton into the ladder, and bash Finlay with it. Finlay is busted open. The Hardys climb either side of the ladder, and both grab the brief case and stare each other down.

ecw recap, 2/27/07

Posted by archangel in Uncategorized, ECW on Sci Fi

this week’s episode opened up with a recap of raw. on raw, in the mcmahon against donald trump feud, trump decided his representative should be bobby lashley, the ecw champion. it will now officially be lashley versus umaga in a hair vs. hair match at wrestlemania 23.

after that was the opening video package, with signifigantly different clips and camera effects to it.

after that was our first match of Mr. Kennedy versus Sabu in an extreme rules match for a qualifying spot in the money in the bank ladder match at wrestlemania 23. at first this match gave me respect for Kennedy, but then I remembered that there is no chance in heaven or hell that vince would ever allow Sabu to appear at wrestlemania, so he never really had a chance anyways.

main highlights:

-Sabu went for his infamous leg lariat, but Kennedy countered with an electric chair

-Sabu executed his viscious somersault plancha

-Kennedy countered Sabu’s triple jump moonsault

-Sabu went for an arabian atomic leg drop through a table, but Kennedy got out of the way in time, gave Sabu a ddt onto the broken table, and got the pinfall. Mr. Kennedy will now be going to the money in the bank match at wrestlemania.

backstage we are shown footage of vince mcmahon arriving at the arena. he looked angry and yelled at the limo driver for not getting there faster.

after that was a match between Balls Mahoney and Matt Stryker. though it would’ve been interesting to see where this would’ve gone, despite the fact that it’s happened a couple of times already, it ended too soon.

main highlights:

-Balls did his signature punching combo

-Bals also did an impressive leg drop off the second rope

-Snitzky interfered and attacked Balls, making Balls the winner by disqualification

-after the match is already over, just for the hell of it, Snitzky puts a beatdown on Stryker as well

next up was a promo from vince concerning the night’s main event, Lashley vs. Hardcore Holly in a steel cage for the ecw championship. vince said that there would be a new stipulation in the match, that is Lashley didn’t win within five minutes, Holy would automatically become ecw champion.

following this was a tag team match continuing the new breed/originals feud with Kevin Thorn and Marcus Cor Von teaming up against Rob Van Dam and Tommy Dreamer. this match was more entertaining for it’s storyline value rather than anything else, but regardless, it was still an entertaining match.

main highlights:

-RVD did what I referr to as a sidesault (a moonsault where the backflip is kinda sideways)

-Dreamer is a flying body splash from the apron onto Cor Von, this being the first time that I personally have seen Dreamer use a more aerial move

-Aerial attempted to interfere in the match, but the Sandman cane-spanked her (caned her across the ass), while behind his and the ref’s backs, Elijah Burke crotched RVD who was on the top rope

-Thorn gave RVD his signature dark kiss move and got the pinfall for yet another victory for the new breed over the originals

backstage Rebecca then interviewed Hardcore Holly on mcmahon’s alteration to the match. Holly basically said he was very happy with the decision, claiming that he couldn’t be beaten in five minutes by anyone.

after that was a match between CM Punk and Stevie Richards, this being the second appearance on the show for the ecw original. Punk showed his excellence in performance as usual and, also as usual, showed the most skill in the ring more than anybody else on the card, which is why I name this the match of the night.

main highlights:

-Richards gave Punk a devastatingly hard chop to the chest

-Richards also gave Punk three consecuative grounded headlocks separated by occasional strikes

-Punk managed to counter the third headlock into a small package pin, somehow

-Punk used the “Go to Sleep” finisher, reminicent of the finisher of the famous Japaneese wrestler KENTA (a gutbuster except the knee goes to the guy’s head), and got the pinfall

after that for some reason they showed yet another recap of the same moment from raw when trump announced that his representative would be Lashley. this basically served no purpose whatsoever.

after that was another dance by extreme expose. they did a song and dance and fireworks went off at the end this time. sometimes I think this is an attempt by vince to rip off the nitro girls from wcw.

following that was the annuncement that the third inductee into the wwe hall of fame would be Jerry “The King” Lawler. honestly I agree with Terry Funk that he (Terry) is the better wrestler and more of a legend in wrestling that Lawler will ever be, so honestly, I don’t really give a crap is Lawler’s going into the hall of fame. he’s occasionaly funny on the mic and I think it’s cool that he had a feud with Andy Kaufman, but he’s barely been outside of Memphis and overall was just kinda there in the wwe hangin around throughout the years.

finally we come to our main event of the night, Bobby Lashley against Hardcore Holly in a steel cage match for the ecw world heavyweight title. this match, as previously mentioned, would have a time limit of five minutes, and if Lashley didn’t win within those five minutes, he would lose the championship. this match wasn’t very good, but it’s what happened after it that truely shocked me. this is not only in that wwe let somebody do this, but also that it was LASHLEY of all people that did it.

main highlights:

-Lashley busted Holly open with some mounted punches

-Holly gave Lashley a sky high superplex off the top rope as Umaga came ringside

-Lashley managed to kick out of a pin attempt from Holly after Holly hit him over the head with a steel chair that Umaga threw into the ring

-Lashley powerslamed Holly and got the pinfall for the win with about 30 seconds to spare in the five minute time limit, then proceeded to launch himself into Umaga THROUGH the cage wall!!!

final thought:

this week’s episode of ecw could’ve been better, but there were indeed a couple moments that saved it from sucking completely. for starters, extreme expose was only good for heels interrupting their dance routine to get added heat, otherwise they’re just useless. this is basically Kelly’s expose with two more people. also the whole thing with Sabu losing matches for stupid reasons, like a ddt puts him away, is just retarded and I would’ve rather have seen how the Balls versus Stryker match ended up uninterrupted, but I guess it’s good for some heat for Snitzky. as for the good parts, I found the tag team match of the night to be very entertaining, CM Punk kicked ass as always, and Lashley going through the wall of the steel cage is timeless. overall it almost balances out, but honestly, they’ve had better weeks.

ECW review, 2/6/07

Posted by archangel in Uncategorized, ECW on Sci Fi

this week’s show opened up with a recap of Vince McMahon’s run-in with Elijah Burke the occurred last week. in case you didn’t watch, Vince claimed that everything about the original ECW sucked, and that Burke was going to be a part of ecw’s future. after he called out Burke, Burke came to the ring and gave an alright promo, after which a bunch of the ECW originals came out and attacked Burke.

appropriately afterwards, Vince adressed the ECW wrestlers in the ring. he said that he would put a few of them in matches tonight and that if any of them were to interfere or attack any of the officials, they would be fired.

after this there was a video promo for Snitsky. with his newly shaven head, as well as his shaved off beard, he now looks like a sad ripoff of Kane.

following this was our first match of the night, Kevin Thorn VS. Tommy Dreamer, with special guest referee  Matt Stryker. this match was a little boring and could’ve been better, but at the same time it did, indeed, play into the storyline well. not that great wrestling-wise, good story-wise.

main highlights:

-Thorn gave Dreamer an interesting inverted jawbreaker

-Thorn also fish hooked Dreamer’s mouth and nose

-Dreamer did his own version of the chokebomb pin, but Stryker faked a leg injury, and did not give him a count

-Thorn clotheslined Dreamer over a knelt down Stryker, and rolled him up, and all of the sudden Stryker’s health returned  and was able to give Thorn the three count for the win

after this, there was a video/interview style promo for Bobby Lashley displaying where he had come from before he was in the WWE.  included were interview from his sister and mother, as well as video clips from Lashley revisiting his old high school, and the place he trained when he wrestled for the army. I thought it was interesting, though it had nothing to do with the rest of the show.

appropriately folowing this was a match between Bobby Lashley and Hardcore Holly. this match was the real sleeper of the night, except for this one move Holly did that impressed me, and I’m not very often impressed by Holly. it was a boring match with one or two good parts to it and an ending that they probably won’t end up following up on.

main highlights:

-Holly locked in a modified camel clutch onto Lashley

-Holly also did a modified figure four leglock into an interesting version of an STF, into a grapevine choke

-Lahley gave Holly a falling pres slam

-Lashley won by pinfall, but after the match, Snitsky interfered and beat on the champion, inevitably delivering Lashley straight into an Alabama slam by Holly

after that, there was a match between Balls Mahoney and Marcus Cor Von. Mahoney came into the match at a disadvantage seeming as his neck had been injured the night before by Umaga on Raw. not a great match, and most of it was Cor Von on the offensive, but it did still move along this new fued well.

main highlights:

-Mahoney gave Cor Von his signature striking combo (a couple punches followed by a windmill punch)

-Cor Von gave Mahoney the pounce

-Cor Von locked on a version of the cobra clutch onto Mahoney and won by knockout (supposedly Mahoney blacked out during this cobra clutch)

next up was another dance number by Extreme Expose, KellyKelly, Layla, and Brook. they danced around to a remix of that song from the Pussycat Dolls “Doncha Wish Your Girlfriend” or whatever the specific name is. it was a short dance number, however, as Matt Stryker interrupted. he announced that he would be the new ring announcer for the next match, with Marcus Cor Von as a special guest commentator, and and Kevin Thorn as the special guest time keeper.

the next match, as Stryker had announced, came immediately after Stryker’s interruption. this was the main event of the night, Rob Van Dam against Elijah Burke. the match was set up greatly, as Vince had claimed Burke to be the future of ECW last week and RVD is the most loved of the ECW originals. while the wrestling wasn’t anything we hadn’t seen before, it was still better than the rest in all of the elements of a good match, thusly making this the match of the night.

main highlights:

-RVD had an interesting legdrop off the top rope to Burke where he held his legs in front of him as he dropped, then sprung them out as he was about to hit the floor

-Burke gave RVD a massive kick to the face while RVD hung over the side of the apron, reminicent of the Undertaker

-Burke also gave RVD an impressive running double knee strike to the chest while RVD was in the corner

-RVD gave Burke his viscious rolling monkey flip

-RVD did his finisher, the five star frog splash, off the top rope, but before he could pin Burke, Thorn rang the bell to end the match; as Stryker tried to announce Burke as the winner of the match, he argued with the ref who was telling him that he never called for the bell, and behind the ref’s back, Burke gave RVD a low blow and pinned him for a three count

after the match, Stryker, Cor Von, and Thorn all went in to beat up RVD, but the Sandman, Tommy Dreamer, and Sabu all came to RVD’s aid.

final thought:

THE BATTLE LINES ARE DRAWN, BITCHES!!! this is looking to be the BEST storyline in the new ECW since is re-launching, the new breed against the ECW originals. the wrestling could be better, and there could be more hardcore matches, but that seems to be a bit of a lost cause at this point. even so, I’m still excited about this brand new storyline and I hope they develop it to the fullest!

ecw review, 30/1/07

Posted by admin in ECW on Sci Fi

Thanks to Steven Gerweck for these results:

Backstage, Vince McMahon runs into Marcus Cor Von, whom he calls a breathe of fresh air. He also spots The Sandman reading a newspaper and drinking beer. Vince gets on him about drinking on the job, and pokes fun of his name by singing “Mr. Sandman.” McMahon said changes are in store. Let’s hope so!

(1) CM Punk vs. Matt Striker. Joey Styles notes that Punk lasted 28 minutes in the Royal Rumble. Striker wins a short match by holding the ropes. I guess Punk remains in the dog house.

Backstage, Vince receives a hug from Rebecca (I think), who was talking to Tommy Dreamer. McMahon wonders what people are dreaming about with a name like Dreamer. Vince said he doesn’t deal in dreams, but in reality.

* Tazz and Styles talked about the Royal Rumble, and showed highlights on the battle royal. They noted that Undertaker now must decide which title he’ll challenge for at Wrestlemania. They showed highlights of The Undertaker showing up on Raw.

* They plugged tonight’s Royal Rumble rematch - Lashley vs. Test. Oh boy!

(2) Hardcore Holly vs. Rob Van Dam. Holly went for an early Alabama Slam, but RVD countered it. Fans are solidly behind Van Dam. RVD dived over the top rope onto Holly, as they went to a commercial break. A big leg drop by RVD, but Holly kicked out. As RVD climbed the top rope, Holly pushed him off forcing RVD to crash into the security rail. Holly then slammed RVD into the ring steps. Holly hit an impressive drop kick, but RVD kicked out. Side kick, windmill kill, followed by rolling thunder, but still, Holly kicked out. Five Star Frog Splash, but Holly got out of the way. Holly slammed RVD into the ring post and then hit the Alabama Slam for the victory. A good TV match!

Backstage, Vince counters Sabu. Vince says he thought he was in Texas, but apparently he is in Afghanistan, and implied that Sabu was a member of the Taliban. He tells Sabu to stay away from him.

After a break, Vince runs into Ball Mahoney backstage. Vince said Mahoney is Irish, but he’s not Irish like himself. He said he likes the name Mahoney, but not his first name. Vince said he might just find out if Mahoney has any Balls.

* Expose with Layla, Kelly Kelly and Brooke. Bathroom break time.

As the girls dance, “No Chance in Hell” comes on, and out struts Vince. He tells the girls to leave his ring, and tells his security to leave as well. Vince said this is history, first time he has ever been in an ECW ring. Vince said the ECW originals suck, the old ECW sucks, and fans that like the old ECW suck. Fans chant “you suck.” McMahon said he is going to turn ECW into something special. Vince said his new vision includes Elijah Burke. Burke comes out all dressed up. McMahon said Burke is the future of ECW. Burke said it was his honor to be in the ring with Vince. Burke poses for a picture with Mr. McMahon. Fans started chanting “you suck” at Burke. Burke said the ECW originals were going to feel his wrath and power. Its time for the Elijah experience. Out comes The Sandman. Sandman starts fighting with Burke, followed by Dreamer, Mahoney and Sabu. Balls desks Burke as he is held down. The Sandman then canes Burke as Mr. McMahon looked on outside the ring. Dreamer gives Burke a DDT. Sabu pointed to the sky, and gets a table from under the ring. Dreamer and Mahoney set up the table, and the ECW originals place Burke on the table in the middle of the ring. Sabu jumps off the top rope, crashing them both through the table. Vince is furious, standing and watching on the entrance ramp.

(3) ECW World Heavyweight title match: Bobby Lashley vs. Test. Lashley backdropped Test on the exposed arena floor. Lashley wins via the running powerslam. Hopefully this will be the end of this feud. The lights go out, and The Undertaker’s dong is heard. When the lights come back on, Undertaker stares down Lashley. Test brings a chair into the ring, but Taker stops Test and chokeslams the clown. Undertaker and Lashley continue to stare each other down, and Styles talks as if Taker will now challenge Lashley for the ECW title at Wrestlemania. I wouldn’t count on that Joey.

ECW Recap, 1/10/07

this week’s show opened up with a recap of last week’s main event. it was RVD vs. Bobbly Lashley for the ECW world title that ended up in a double knockout. they then announced that the rematch would occur tonght.

following this, with brad armstrong at ringside, was our first match of the night, CM Punk against Hardcore Holly. this match, though it was alright, I feel was a little bland for Punk’s potential to carry a match, but hey, there’s only so much that one man can do! this match was alright, I guess.

main highlights:

-Punk did a dropkick to the back of the head and neck of Holly, looking almost like a less powerful, reverse shining wizard

-Punk attempted a suicide dive to Holly, but Holly was able to step out of the way in time

-Holly got Punk tied up in the ropes and delivered a few cross-body strikes

-Holly suprizingly delivered a second rope leg drop to Punk

-Holly, after sending Punk into the steel post, gave him a spinning Alabama Slam, and got the three count on Punk for the win

after this, a referee went backstage to tell Test that his match was up next. Test replied saying that he felt overlooked, and that he should be in the ECW world title picture. he said that because of this, he refused to participate in his schedueled match tonight.

next up was Elijah Burke in the middle of the ring issuing an open challenge, saying that he would knockout any of the wrestlers backstage or anyone in the crowd. Sandman answered this challenged, and ended up caning Burke a few times. Burke then fled the ring.

they then went into a video clip promo for The Great Khali. the promo made him look dominant and destructive, as wwe is good with making such promos, even though in reality Khali sucks and should be taken out of wrestling before he kills someone else. that’s right, someone ELSE.

appropriately following was a match with The Great Khali against Tommy Dreamer. while this match was eh as it was, the stipulation of this being extreme rules could’ve been used a bit more. Dreamer did come out with a road sign, but that’s one weapon out of many that could’ve been used but weren’t. vince doesn’t know shit about ECW hardcore.

main highlights:

-Khali steps on the road sign that Dreamer brought in basically as the match began, giving Dreamer no opportunity to use it

-Khali put a foot choke onto Dreamer while Dreamer was downed in the turnbuckle, Khali’s foot and Dremer’s head ending up against the apron

-Dreamer regained hold of his sign and started hiting both Khali and Daivari with it

-Khali punched Dreamer through the sign, chokebombed him, then got the three count with one foot on Dreamer’s chest

RVD then had an interview backstage. he said that other people seemed to think that he was too calm about things and that it showed that he didn’t care about anything. he, of course, said that this wasn’t true, and that he cared deeply about ECW and about regaining the title. no idea where he heard that rumor from, so I guess this was just an excuse for Rob to have a promo.

next up was a match between Kevin Thorn and Shannon Moore. Moore has been jobbing out every week in ECW, and this week was no different. at least when he jobbed in TNA, they let him show a little talent while he did it, not to mention he actually WON A MATCH when he was teamed up with Samoa Joe. anyways, I digress, this match was alright, with Thorn given the opportunity to show of some of his true skill.

main highlights:

-Thorn gave Moore some cross body strikes

-Moore countered a move Thorn tried to do running at him in a corner with an elbow; this would end up as Moore’s only offensive, or defensive for that matter, move the entire match

-Thorn grabbed Moore by the back of his pants and the back of his mohawk while Moore was on the second turnbuckle, and flipped him over, causing Moore to land in the middle of the ring, flat on his face

-Thorn did his normal finisher, a stunner while his opponent’s legs hung onto the top rope, this time staring deep into Moore’s eyes before he did it and Joey Styles announcing that Thorn called it the “Dark Kiss”; Thorn then got the three count for the victory

we were then shown a clip of Lashley getting ready backstage. again, he looked pumped and ready.

they then did a video clip promo for KellyKelly, announcing she would “return” to ECW next week. I never really noticed that she was signifigantly “gone” at all, but I just hope this doesn’t result in another striptease wasting all of our time.

finally, we come to our main event, the rematch for the ECW world title between Rob Van Dam and Bobby Lashley. this match was highly entertaining and had plenty of good highlights to it, and so it thusly gets my approval for seal of the night, despite the fact that the endings for ECW main events seem to be tending to get a bit predictable, another screwjob.

main highlights:

-Lashley had a spear to RVD delivered early on in the match, completely mowing RVD over

-RVD did a STANDING 450 leg drop! even though it missed, that’s still pretty damn cool!

-Lashley gave RVD a running shoulberblock while RVD wsa on the apron, sending RVD into the crowd

-RVD set up Lashley on the announce table, much like he did last week, and went for his signature spinning leg drop form the apron, but Lashley got out of the way in time and RVD hit the bottom of his leg against the edge of the announce table, and it looked like it HURT!

-eventually, Test interrupted with a chair and hit both Lashley and RVD, resulting in a no contest finish with Lashley still champion

final thought:

this week’s episode of ECW was alright, better than last week. the biggest dissapointment, really, had to be that we finally got to see a hardcore match back on the show, but it really wasn’t that hardcore. also, yet another main event on ECW ends in yet another screwjob, it seems to be getting a little reduntant now. still, an alright show with the main event finally getting match of the night.

ecw review, 1/2/07

Posted by archangel in ECW on Sci Fi

hello everybody, I have returned. sorry I’ve been gone for a while, had some stoof I needed to take care of. it’s all good now, though, so I shall be returning to my normal routine of doing my reviews each week. again, I apologize for my absense.

This week’s show opened up with a promo hyping the main event of Bobby Lashley against Rob Van Dam for the ECW title. I thought it was pretty well made, covered that RVD is a former champ trying to get it back and that Bobby is the current champ trying to keep it. though, this is wwe, and it’s Lashley’s first title defense aside from the rematch clause so, yeah, we all know what happens.

Next up we have test doing an in-ring promo as well as showing clips of last week’s main event, where he beat sabu and RVD in a match, then it was revealed that RVD would be facing Lashley this week. Test basically said it was crap and that he deserved to be wrestling for the title, wether the fans liked him or not.

Appropriately following this was a match between Test and Sabu. this is an obvious sign that either Vince is still mad at Sabu for slacking off when it came to doing things such as photo shoots and falling asleep backstage, or that Vince is mad at sabu becaue he’s still doing it. either way, Sabu got little opportunity to show his skill in this match, and jobbed out to Test. sorry to ruin the ending, but it wasn’t that great.

main highlights:

-Test had an interesting combp with two backbreakers and a sidewalk slam

-Test also wisely did a bearhug submission hold on Sabu, since one of the ways to face Sabu is to slow him down

-Sabu did a springboard tornado ddt

-Test did his finisher, the torture rack neckbreaker, and got the three count

After this we are shown footage of RVD getting ready backstage for his match, he looked pumped.

They gave Sandman a nice clip-promo after this, I liked it. had some cool highlights and showed what the character of the Sandman was all about, except for the Metallica song since Vince is a cheap bastard and because Metallica would’ve way overcharged to have them use their song.

Elijah Burke is then shown doing an in-ring promo alongside Sylvester Terkai. he said that the only question there was whenever they got in the ring was not wether or not they would win, it would be wether they won by KO or tap out.

Again, appropriately following an in-ring promo, there was a match between Sylvester Terkai and Elijah Burke versus the FBI (this is, btw, a good system to use for a one hour show). this match was alright, though, we all know what happens since FBI have not won a single match since joining the new ECW.

main highlights:

-Little Guido did a nice crucifix on Burke

-Burke did an impressive flying double knee press to Guido in the corner

-I also liked a combo Burke did with a verticle suplex then backdrop

-Burke attempted a top rope move while Guido was on the ground, Guido countered by putting up his boot, but Burke stopped before the boot hit his face and went for an elbow drop, but Guido was able to get up and out of the way before it could hit him

-Terkai basically picked up Malmaluke by the back of the neck, then slammed him back down face first, followd by that kneeling armlock he does for the win

We were then shown footage of Bobby Lashley getting ready backstage, he seemed very ready and focused.

After that, they advertised a match between CM Punk and Hardcore Holly next week, followed by a promo from Matt Stryker. Stryker showed on his chalkboard that “Punk’s anaconda vice + 3 [minutes he had during his last match with Holly]

The Great Khali def. “The Reject” Shannon Moore
The Great Khali made his ECW in-ring debut after Daivari coaxed “The Reject” Shannon Moore into a singles match earlier in the night. Davari stepped aside for Khali to decimate Moore.
Tommy Dreamer came to ringside with a steel chair and nailed Daivari. Khali immediately came to his associate’s defense and hit a two-handed chokeslam atop the steel ring steps. EMTs flooded the ringside area and carted Dreamer out on a stretcher.

Test def. Rob Van Dam & Sabu in a Triple Threat Match
In the shows main event, RVD looked to be on his way to victory with a Five-Star Frog Splash until Test stole RVD’s pin on Sabu.
To Test’s dismay, moments after his victory, the revelation was made that Van Dam received the most votes on ECW.com.
